About ultrasound

What is an ultrasound scan?

An ultrasound scan is a non-invasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create pictures of the inside of the body.

Ultrasound is commonly used to assess soft tissues, abdominal organs, pelvic organs, the thyroid, breast tissue, testicles, tendons, joints and blood flow. It does not use ionising radiation.

Safety

Is an ultrasound scan safe?

Ultrasounds use a low dose of ionising radiation. The risk from a standard diagnostic Ultrasound is very small, but the scan should still be clinically appropriate and justified.

Our doctors review your symptoms and medical history before referral. If you are pregnant or may be pregnant, this must be discussed before your appointment so the safest approach can be agreed.

Clinical value

What an ultrasound scan can tell you

Ultrasounds can help identify fractures, joint wear, arthritis, bone alignment changes, some infections, chest abnormalities and other structural concerns.

Your images are reviewed by a consultant radiologist, who prepares a formal report to support diagnosis, onward referral or treatment planning.

FAQs

Your questions, answered

Common questions about private ultrasound scans, booking, preparation and results.

Do I need a GP referral or a self-referral for a private ultrasound scan?

You do not need a referral from your regular GP to start with PrivateScans. After booking, our in-house medical team will contact you to understand your symptoms and medical history.

Where ultrasound is appropriate, our clinicians can prepare the referral information required by your chosen scanning centre.

Why should I pay for a private ultrasound scan?

Patients often choose private ultrasound because appointments may be available sooner, results can be provided faster, and clinic location and appointment time may be more convenient.

Private ultrasound can also provide access to a wide range of diagnostic scan types with clear clinical support before and after the appointment.

What is the booking process for a private ultrasound scan?

Start by choosing your scan, body part and location online. Our clinical team will then review your medical information and confirm the most appropriate ultrasound request.

Your chosen scanning centre will confirm appointment availability and provide any preparation instructions before you attend.

What should I expect when I arrive for a private ultrasound scan?

You may be asked to complete a consent form and confirm your medical details. Preparation depends on the scan type, and your scanning centre will provide instructions in advance.

Many ultrasound scans do not require changing into a gown, although this depends on the body area being examined.

How long does an ultrasound scan take?

The scan itself usually takes around 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the body area and the type of ultrasound required.
