Pricing from £499

What can an abdomen and pelvis CT scan assess?

Depending on the protocol, CT can show the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, bowel, bladder, pelvic organs, lymph nodes and major blood vessels. Some examinations use contrast to make particular organs or vessels easier to assess.

Why might a clinician recommend this scan?

  • Persistent or unexplained abdominal or pelvic pain
  • Suspected kidney stones or urinary tract obstruction
  • Assessment of selected inflammatory, infective or structural conditions
  • Further investigation of a mass or abnormality identified by another test

How to prepare

Follow the appointment instructions. Preparation varies: some abdominal and pelvic CT examinations require fasting or oral/IV contrast, while others do not. Tell the team about medicines, allergies, kidney problems and any possibility of pregnancy before the scan.

Safety and limitations

CT uses ionising radiation. The referring clinician and imaging team consider whether the expected diagnostic benefit justifies the exposure and tailor the examination to the clinical question. Contrast is used only when appropriate.

How does it compare with other scans?

Ultrasound may be suitable for some gallbladder, pelvic or urinary questions; MRI may provide more detail for selected soft tissues. The best test depends on symptoms and the question being investigated.

More than a scan: doctor-led care before and after

Your scan is part of a supported care pathway. You do not need to arrange your own referral.

Before your scan: GP consultation

Discuss your symptoms, medical history and concerns with a GP. This helps you understand whether the scan is appropriate and what the examination is intended to investigate. If imaging is clinically appropriate, PrivateScans arranges the referral as part of the process.

After your scan: understand the report

Your images are reviewed and reported by a Consultant Radiologist. Your post-scan GP consultation gives you an opportunity to discuss the report in context, ask questions and understand possible next steps.
