What can I expect from Prostate Profile?

This profile measures total PSA and free PSA, two forms of prostate-specific antigen produced by the prostate gland. Looking at both measurements and their relationship can provide additional information when assessing prostate health.

PSA testing is used as one part of prostate-cancer risk assessment and for monitoring some people with known prostate disease, but it is not a definitive cancer test. PSA can rise for non-cancerous reasons such as prostate enlargement, inflammation or recent ejaculation. Avoiding ejaculation for around 48 hours before testing can reduce the chance of a misleading rise.

Prostate

PSA measurements provide information about the prostate gland. Results can be affected by several prostate conditions and should always be interpreted alongside age, symptoms and clinical context.

Free prostate specific antigen (free PSA)

Free PSA measures the portion of PSA circulating without being bound to proteins. It is interpreted alongside total PSA and may provide additional information when assessing the likelihood of benign versus malignant prostate conditions.

Free : total PSA ratio

The free-to-total PSA ratio compares free PSA with total PSA. In selected situations it can provide additional context when a total PSA result is raised, although it does not diagnose prostate cancer on its own.

Total prostate specific antigen (PSA)

Total PSA measures prostate-specific antigen circulating in the blood. PSA can rise with prostate cancer but also with benign enlargement, inflammation and other non-cancerous causes, so it is not diagnostic on its own.

How do I read my results?

Laboratory results are provided with reference ranges which are based on the normal test results of a large group of healthy people from the same age group and gender as yourself.

Sometimes, healthy people get results outside the reference range, while people with health problems can have results in the normal range. If your results fall outside the reference range, or if you have symptoms despite a normal result, you may require more testing or wish to discuss the result with your GP. Alternatively you can book an appointment with one of our Private GP for £49 if you would like to discuss your results in more detail.

For simplicity, we provided your results graphically, so they are easy to understand. Any result flagged amber is outside of the standard range. Normal results are in green.
