About the test

What can I expect from Iron Status Profile?

This profile measures the key markers used to understand how much iron is circulating in the blood, how well it is being transported and how much is stored. It includes serum iron, ferritin, TIBC, UIBC and transferrin saturation.

Low iron can contribute to iron-deficiency anaemia, with symptoms such as tiredness, shortness of breath, palpitations, headaches and pale skin. Ferritin also behaves as an inflammation marker, so results need to be interpreted in context. High iron levels can also require follow-up, including consideration of conditions such as haemochromatosis.

What gets tested?

Iron studies

Iron studies assess circulating and stored iron and how effectively iron is carried in the blood. Low iron can contribute to anaemia, fatigue, weakness and other symptoms.

Ferritin

Ferritin is the main storage protein for iron and is commonly used to estimate the body’s iron stores. It can also rise during inflammation, so results are interpreted alongside other iron markers and clinical context.

Iron

Serum iron measures iron circulating in the blood at the time of testing. It is interpreted with ferritin, transferrin or binding-capacity measures to assess iron deficiency or excess.

Total iron-binding capacity (TIBC)

TIBC estimates the blood’s capacity to bind and transport iron, largely through transferrin. It helps distinguish different patterns of iron deficiency and iron overload.

Transferrin saturation

Transferrin saturation estimates the percentage of iron-binding sites on transferrin that are occupied by iron. It helps assess whether the body has too little or too much circulating iron.

Unsaturated iron-binding capacity (UIBC)

UIBC measures the unused capacity of transferrin to bind additional iron. It is interpreted with serum iron and TIBC when assessing iron status.

How do I read my results?

Laboratory results are provided with reference ranges which are based on the normal test results of a large group of healthy people from the same age group and gender as yourself.

Sometimes, healthy people get results outside the reference range, while people with health problems can have results in the normal range. If your results fall outside the reference range, or if you have symptoms despite a normal result, you may require more testing or wish to discuss the result with your GP. Alternatively you can book an appointment with one of our Private GP for £49 if you would like to discuss your results in more detail.

For simplicity, we provided your results graphically, so they are easy to understand. Any result flagged amber is outside of the standard range. Normal results are in green.
